FCE Ultra

I like Nintendo and I like Nintendo games. I like playing them on my computer using a Nintendo emulator. For the past few years my favorite emulator for Linux has been FCE Ultra/FCEU.

A screenshot of the Nintendo game 'Contra.'

At some point the FCE Ultra author retired and either took down the website or didn’t bother to re-upload it after it disappeared for whatever reason. Me and a guy named Anthony Giorgio have taken over the FCE Ultra SourceForge project. We’ve uploaded the most recently files, grabbed copies of the old website from web.archive.org and uploaded it, and we checked the source code into Subversion.

We probably won’t have much time to work on it, but I’ll gladly assisted anyone who wants to help out.

Only have time for a quick comment, so bear with me.

If you’re wondering who this is, I am the author of FakeNES, former friend of xodnizel, and the ex-guy named stainlessKnight who used to make FCE Ultra WIP builds for Windows back when it was canceled but the author was still making changes to the Source Code.

Regarding your takeover of the FCE Ultra project, I’ve voiced my concern over this matter over at http://fakenes.sourceforge.net. Please give it a read when you get some time, but don’t take anything I say for granted. I don’t want to be hostile, just want to make sure things are done right. :)

    Take care.

Well we haven’t claimed to release new, official versions (yet, anyway). So far we’ve only posted what we believe to be the last 2 public releases (0.98.12 and 0.98.13-pre). And we posted two packages that we found elsewhere (0.98.15), but those are intended more so we have a record of possible changes that could be made. Would it be different if we posted a patch between the “0.98.15” source and the 0.98.13 source?

My main motivation was that there should be SOMEWHERE to download FCE Ultra, since people seem to still be using it (the MythGame plugin for MythTV).

I’ve tried to contact xodnizel, but have been unable to find any valid contact information for him. I don’t even know if xodnizel is his real name or a nickname. I’ve come across 4 email addresses for him, but they all bounced. I would love to talk to him a little bit and find out what happened to the webpage, or if he has a more recent version of the source code that he’d be willing to share.

Xodnizel has every right to the name “FCE Ultra,” and it is well within his rights to ask us to stop using it. However, I can’t think of a better way to honor his work than to continue making the project accessible to people. And what better way to do that than to use a name that people are already familiar with?

You won’t be able to contact xodnizel, as his Internet identity has been completely washed away by now. I can contact xodnizel privately if it becomes absolutely necessary, but I’d rather not (our friendship kind-of had a bad end).

Still, if you’re going to go ahead and do this, then I’d like to help out and do what I can if you think that would be alright. I’m around nearly all the time, so feel free to call on me whenever you like. My SourceForge.net username is ‘stainless’.

        Take care.

On a side note, I took an hour or so to throw up something decent over at Wikipedia.

I always wanted to start to work on some emulator, but I have only basic C++ expirence, and English is my second language.

How hard is to understand and to program one from the scretch? Are there any tutorials to bring a programmer up to the speed?

I have a lot of question, but not sure that anyone likes to answer them. :(

            Thanks in advance!

Contact me (see my user info page @ http://siloh.livejournal.com/profile for possible methods) and I can probably guide you through the basics. Make sure that you have all the prerequesits though (compiler system, graphics library, etc.) and know how to use them. :p

    FCE Ultra: Contra Game cheats?

Hi, how do you set the cheat to get infinite lives for FCE Ultra: Contra? Thanks

Re: FCE Ultra: Contra Game cheats?

I have no idea. But Contra isn’t THAT hard. You could probably beat it with 30 lives, using the Konami cheat code. Enter up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b, a when the game is starting. It should show that you have 30 lives.

WOW! Great….recently I went to Canada to visit my parents…I promised the kids that we can chat through Yahoo Messenger, since that’s what we all use soon as I arrive. However, while in Canada, I had trouble connecting to Yahoo Messenger…the attendant at the coffee shop told me to visit http://www.meebo.com …great site! From there, I had access to all my yahoo, msn, google talk and AIM friends……sort of a one stop shop!

    I’m checking their chatrooms now…thanks

When mom and i took you kids on our California trip years ago we stayed at the Roosevelt Hotel, whose sign appears in the distance in on of your first few photos. The very first academy awards event was held there in the 1920’s or 30’s! It was kind of dumpy when we stayed there. Good move on the shades, Emily. Dad

Hey there! I know this is kinda off topic but I was wondering if you knew where I could get a captcha plugin for my comment form? I’m using the same blog platform as yours and I’m having trouble finding one? Thanks a lot!

Rich: I’m using the Akismet plugin that was included when I installed WordPress. It works wonderfully.
